It’s Never Been Cheaper To Go Solar in Texas

Take advantage of a 30% tax credit that is set to expire in 2020

Solar panels are popping up all over Texas. You may have seen some in your neighbourhood. They are great for the environment and you save on electricity every month. But…

The big question most Texas homeowners have is – “How much will it cost me?”

To most Texan’s surprise, solar panels are actually more affordable than they ever have been. Prices have gone down 60% and the average payback period is less than 5 years!

What happened recently to make solar panels so much more affordable?

The government has been supporting solar panel installations with federal and state tax incentives. They want to make solar affordable for all Americans.

Unfortunately, the discounts won’t last for long. By 2022, the federal tax incentive will be gone…

In 2019, A Federal Tax Credit Will Save You 30%

Texas homeowners have been rushing to take advantage of a 30% federal tax incentive. In simple terms, the government will pay for 30% of your solar installation. That’s a huge savings, but it won’t last forever.

In 2020, the tax incentive is set to reduce to 26%. In 2021, it will be reduced again to 22%. By 2022, the tax incentive will expire and be gone forever.

“In 2019, we have seen an increase in installations by 75%,” said Jim Gover, Project Manager at Momentum Solar, adding “The Texas homeowners we work with are well aware of the better tax incentive in 2019. They want to make sure they are getting the best return on their investment.”

For Example: If your solar panels costs $12,000, you save $1,360 more by installing them in 2019 instead of 2021. If you wait until 2022, you will miss out on the entire savings of $4,000.

If you are serious about getting solar panels in Texas – get it done in 2019 while the 30% tax credit still applies.

Jim at Momentum said, “We offer free, no obligation estimates for curious homeowners in Texas. That way they can make an informed decision if going solar is worth it for them. We provide them with the payback period and how much savings they should see on their electricity bill.”

Many Texans are thinking they should wait longer, to see if prices drop further…

“Solar installation has gone down in price a lot in the last 10 years. This is mostly because of better technology. But, we have noticed the prices have stabilized this year. We work with Texas homeowners to calculate how much it would cost for them to install in 2019 versus waiting a few years. In every case, we found it was better for them to install in 2019 because of the 30% federal tax incentive.”

In addition to the federal tax credit there are also state, regional and utility rebates for homeowners. Each home is different so your savings will vary based on where exactly you live in Texas.

Your Roof Has To Work

Before investing in solar panels, you first need to make your roof gets enough sun.

Solar panels can only produce electricity when they are exposed to the sun. The more sunlight that hits your panels, the better.

“We are passionate about solar panels because we care about the environment. At the same time, we know solar panels are a big investment for our customers. That’s why we take the time to look at all the costs so they can make an informed financial decision. If their roof and house location isn’t going to generate enough electricity, we won’t sell to them.” said Jim at Momentum Solar.

You want to install your panels on a section of roof that is facing south. This means that your panels will get sun all day as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

If your south-facing section of roof is covered in shade all day, you will have a hard time generating enough electricity to justify the costs.

Note: Please do not get on your roof to check this out!

Walk 20 to 30 feet away from your house and take a look at the south facing section at various times of the day. Take note if there are any large trees or other buildings that cause a shadow.

If you are getting sun for the majority of the day you should be good to proceed to the next step.

Know Your Current Electricity Costs

Your electricity cost depends on where you live in the United States. Connecticut has the highest cost of electricity whereas Washington has the lowest cost.

The higher your costs, the more you can save after switching to solar.

During the summer months, most solar panels generate more electricity than you need. The electrical company will buy the extra electricity you make to help power other homes.

Not only will you be contributing to your community – you will also get a credit on your electrical bill.
